OOPS!
LOOKS LIKE THE GST STUFFED THE ECONOMY.
(Never mind, the elections aren't
due till 2002)
Despite earnest entreaties and horrendous threats, the number of Australian
businesses failing to obtain an ABN (Australian Business Number) so that
the GST (Goods & Services Tax) will function is reported to be ~30%.
Who can blame them. Compliance requires the submission of regular
(monthly?) reports telling of all the sales & purchases made.
The Australian people have never wanted the GST. No single issue
vote or poll has ever indicated 50% support for GST.
Why is the government melded to the GST? Some possibilities that
occur are:
-
Is it oxymoronic to state "politicians of limited intellect see GST as
the simplest way of ensuring that funds for their pension will be available."?
-
In the universe of politics, importance is measured by money volume.
It follows that self interest prohibits all but the most enlightened politician
from understanding that "less tax makes the public richer".
-
"More tax dollars means more Tammany Hall votes can be purchased."
Is there a limiting value there somewhere?
-
Perhaps the government really does think that it has a mandate, despite
failure to win a majority in the Senate.
SPIN believes that the fault lies with the Australian
constitution, which does not allow "we the people" direct control of our
representatives.
